My tattoos

Well since my last post I have gotten a lot of tattoos over some of my vitiligo areas as you can see. I couldn't think of anything else to do. Obviously I could not afford such a surgery and I already had some tattoos, so I thought what a great idea! Much cheaper! And I have never been so happy in my life and if anything, way more confident. When I went outside for the first time in shorts this summer, I felt soo weird! It felt like everyone was staring at my vitiligo, but then people started commenting on how nice my tattoo was! I was thinking "I can get used to this!" I feel truly blessed. I hope myself along with other people with this disease can get as much awarness out as possible. Thanks to everyone that has supported me.

  1. Hi Kelly,
My name is martha and i'm 27 years old. I noticed my vitiligo about 13 years ago. it was only 2 spots on my thigh; perfectly round circles until 3 years ago it started spreading and i had it around my eyes covering both of my eyelids completely and also on the bottom of my left eye, on my shoulder, stomach, breast. just small spots. until 3 months ago i saw a doctor who gave me a cream; and its not the protopic ointment that doctors usually recommed. the spots on my eyes were 50% covered within 6 weeks and now 2 1/2 months later are 90%gone. its amazing. whereas the spots on my shoulders and stomach are covering at a much slower pace. but I know this 8 year old kid who uses the same cream who had it all over and it took him about 5-6 months to get it to cover on his legs, hands, and feet which is quick because thares the hardest to get your color back. contact me and i can give you more info if you still have hope. you can contact me by myspace;or i'll check back for a response

    24. Hi

I have had vitiligo for about 10 years now..I am 49 so grateful that it started for me quite late in life but i have it on my face, hands, arms, legs, feet, breasts and on my privates lol...i have just started tatooing skin colour and eventhough much better than before still getting there. My tattoo artist is wonderful only charging me for materials at the moment ($50 a session) which is unbelievable until he says we get it right but I would love to try this cream too. At least we know you had success with it. I tried some oil years ago with a money back guarantee. It didn't work and no they didn't give me my money back lol..so very skeptical to keep trying stuff. My email address is yolandek@me.com. I would so appreciative. Thanking you. Yolande, Perth WA

  3. Hi Kelley. My name is Carlos and I've had Vit since I was about 5 years old. It started as a small circle on my ankle. Its now progress all over my body, including my hands, knees, elbows, and my privates. i've lived with lots of heckling, whispers, and jokes. And like you I guess, I've been to millions of doctors who admit they don't know what to do, and those willing to experiment on me with a laser or some cream. Everyone I've met whose tried some medical treatment either found it unaffordable or found out the hard way they were being experimented with. (Including folks who had treatment from pristine institutions such as Johns Hopkins. I've found my best way to get through this is to embrace it. I encourage people to ask about it, and I sometimes give them an education before they ask. I find it helps to break down barriers. While there's still no definitive solution to VIT, most evidence suggest that it will continue to grow across our bodies, but perhaps not at the same rate. I'm always finding a new area on my body. And now, no longer married and back on the dating scene, I actually look for people who have VIT, cause I know they are likely to have something in common with me. I've also used it to educate and raise my daughter to be accepting of others and that God made us all different and somehow very much the same. I use my VIT as a badge of courage and a starting point of sharing just how good God is. Not everyone can wear this badge of mine.

Holla at me if you like. Carlos.Fields813@gmail.com

  6. Wow that tattoo looks great. I have a tattoo to cover up a spot on my foot and was toying with the idea of putting tattoos over all of my spots, but I found this homeopathic remedy that is helping to bring the color back into my skin. It is a slow process, but it is inexpensive, and is not time consuming. I don't usually tell people about it because I never know how people will react. If you want to know more you can contact me at bluebutterfly32@gmail.com

  10. Hey,
Thanks for making this blog. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one in the world with spots. I am 25 years old, and I got my first spot only 3 years ago. It has spread rapidly and now covers quite a bit of my body. I live in Arizona and cannot go lay by the pool anymore and I wear clothing that is better suited for the Arctic circle. At first, I was diagnosed incorrectly, and so for the first year and a half I was using the wrong treatments, and then everything I have tried since then hasn't worked. The treatments are time consuming and expensive. I have only had vitiligo for three years and I have not fully accepted it, but I am already sick of trying to get rid of it. I don't want to revolve my life around it. I recently spent 3 months in South America and although I wore long sleeves and never went swimming, I didn't let it hold me back and it felt good. I am considering tattoos also, but I haven't made a final decision. I use a lot of makeup now. I want the confidence to just wear short sleeves and not care if people look at me. I am working on it. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks for making this blog. You are gorgeous and you are not alone.

  12. Thank you for posting your pictures and for keeping up to date with research. I only found out about the stem cell stuff from your post.
I have suffered from vitiligo from the age of 3 and can't remember ever looking in the mirror and not seeing it. It has become so much a part of myself that I've grown used to making excuses about my clothing choices from "I don't like my legs" to "I haven't shaved today" and "I don't like swimming that much". I've had light therapy and all the treatments. I have the concealing creams to cover it, but they never come together in the right colours.

I have segmental vitiligo on my right leg and it's shape and placement is very much like yours. The pictures of your tattos inspired me and I'm thinking of getting my own done. I really like them and as my husband and sisters are all artistic I thought I could get them to design them for me. Thanks for your inspiration.

My main concern is that it will cause my vitiligo to spread even more because that is what some of the research says. I would just like to know if anyone has experienced any negative outcomes from a tattoo over vitiligo?

Hi I'm 27 and I've had vitiligo for 7 yrs..I notice the spots came up 2 mos after I had my daughter so I'm not sure if child birth triggered it...anyway I have vitiligo on my face which are small white patches on both sides of my cheeks and little spots around my eyebrows and the bridge of my nose...over the years it did spread but its not spreading as rapidly so my case is fairly mild...ironically I'm a makeup artist so I can cover them up with makeup and no one will ever know...but it bothers me and I'm tired of seeing patches on my face when I wash my makeup off...I'm thinking of tatooing the white patches on my face with a color very close to my complexion but I'm scared of the results and I'm not too sure if that's safe can someone please give me some info on this

  25. Hi all. I am a 27 year old female with universal Vitiligo. I found out about my Vitiligo when I was 17 years old and had gone into a tanning booth to get a nice little tan for my prom. It began with white patches on my breasts and stomach, and over the years, my pigmentation is has been roughly 90% depleted. I am Irish and rather fair, so I realize and feel for those with darker skin that this is extremely stressful and saddening for many of you. I've tried the ointments/creams prescribed by dermatologists and I've gone in for appointments for a discussion of light therapy. The risks of light therapy made me choose to accept my condition for what is is. For those who are interested in trying to make your lighter patches as even as the pigmented skin as possible, let me provide a temporary yet semi-satisfying option. I bought the Jergen's sunless tanning foam (light to medium) and tried it, knowing of the possibility of it turning my skin orange. It did not match up with the color of my pigmented skin, but it was close enough that it made my uneven skin tone less noticeable. You can buy it at CVS. If I have events to go to (weddings), I will often use Jergen's or make an appointment for a full-body airbrush spray tan ($30) at a local tanning salon/day spa. It doesn't fix the problem, but there is no real fix to the problem unfortunately yet. Honestly, I am just waiting for the rest of my pigment to depigment, because I would rather be completely pale than uneven. But, I'm OK with that when it happens. I strongly advise people to not tattoo their depigmented areas because I am proof of it starting out small and ending up universal. You will end up with a ton of unwanted tattoos and added white patches. I mean, you can't (or shouldn't) tattoo your whole body! Just my opinion. I think that if I had darker skin, I would opt to try out the repigmentation options, but if you have light enough skin, wait it out and see what happens. Use the Jergens to fill in spots uncovered by clothes. You're not alone and you don't owe anyone an explanation. I just say "I have a skin condition." They usually shut up after that. Good luck to all.

  26. Hi , As a girl thats covered in tattoos and with vit, ive finally decided to cover my huge pacth on my leg, it goes from the msall of my back to me knee, Ive just booked the appointment but decided to check up on it anyway, I found a site that said it can make it worse and make it spread, has anyone had any problems? x

  27. Wow im sorry aboout my spelling in that last post, im in a hurry :/ x

  28. To the female who wrote the two posts above: I advise you to not cover it up with a tattoo. My Vit started out small and ended up universal. I wouldn't use the word "spread" as it isn't a rash... but your pigment cells will deplete so it will appear to spread. Just because you have one white spot doesnt mean that covering it up will prevent the cells around it to depigment too..... Tattoos dont make it worse it may make your body look worse in the long run when you have white patches plus unwanted tats. Dont tattoo it, trust me. Bare Minerals/Essentuals (not sure which one) has a tanning lotion called "Faux Tan"... try filling it in with that maybe? Maybe you can purchase it on ebay. hang in there.... I know how you're feeling.... I've lost 95% of my pigment.

  29. I 1st noticed my vitilago at age 33,i'm 37 now. It's spreading slowley on me. I 1st noticed it on the tip of my private area as a small pink dot. The whole head is pink now,the back of my ears are pink. Pink dots on my feet,4 small pink Dots on face. I have locs but I can tell the whole middle of my scalp is white. Funny, this is the only part of my skin that's white not pink. A little repigmentation occurs every so often like my body continues to fight it. I've noticed somethings though. I'm 350lbs,my sugar is high but i'm not considered diabetic. Last year I made it a point to lose weight. I lost 22lbs,blood sugar came down and I noticed I was repigmenting in some areas. I researched on my own with no help whatsoever from these sorry ass so called dermatologists that over 90% of people with vitilago are diabetic and are vitamin B deficient, which leads me to my next point. On my own strict regimen I was eating bran flakes and two fried eggs in olive oil everyday, along with a banana and orange juice. For lunch after my running and weightlifting, it was sardines, yogurt, and a orange and peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat bread. Dinner consisted of something like turkey wings, fish, salmon, avocados, beans, spinach or brocolli. EVERYDAY for four months! I was loading up on vitamin B and didn't even know it! I say this to you that I think in alot of cases diet has everything to do with it. Sardines, bran flakes, eggs,I was loading up! Mind you my cholesterol was great before this regimen except for my hdl, which started to increase when I started working out. Hdl was 31,doctor wanted it over 40,which is a good thing. My triglycerides stayed norm and LDL actually got 10 points lower. So the 2eggs everyday wasn't an issue and found out it's good for you as long as you don't add bacon or any other meats with it. But that good thing came to an end when me and my son's mother got back together, the stress came back in my life with her, started eating all the bs and carryout everyday,I gained the weight back, and the repigmentation progress ceased. Will be starting again soon. I want to add some vitamin B injections to see if it helps any,and msybe some chicken or beef liver which are the number most potent source of vitamin B. swps75

  30. I noticed 2 nickle sized white patches in the middle of my back and within 2 months I had them in my scalp.as a black man with VIT it is very disheartening and embarrassing to go out in public without a hat!I recently tattoed my spots and I can see already that my self esteem has skyrocketed exponentially.I hope that the tattoos are permanent fix to this waning issue!

I have vitiligo really bad,it's covered the whole of my face and I have huge white pates all over my body, Im having treatment 3days a week for it, I go out fully covered feel so self conscious that everyone's staring at my arms if I'm wearing a tshirt, I first got it when I was 12 I'm now 21. I've got use to dealing with it now but most of my body is tattooed to try take the attention from my vitaligo! It's hard to deal with when every bodies staring at your patches like you have a contagious disease, but there's worst people out there than us, I was so depressed going through height school I got bullied so much, because I'm a girl people thought I had make up on and couldn't put it on properly. Some people are so judgemental when they don't no what it's like to live with everyday

  35. Just thought I share my case of Vitiligo, it's kinda unique. I had an accident that gave me "borderline" 3rd degree burns to about 30% of my right hand when I was 36, the burn was deep enough that the doctor told me the pigmentation will never return. I accepted this and never let it bother me for the longest time, but then some years later white spots begin appearing on the non-burnt part of my right hand as well as my left hand, these were small patches for a while and did not grow but they've began spreading and other tiny little spots began appearing rapidly in the last couple of years, tops of my feet are also starting to have them and I can see them getting larger by the day. Here's the interesting part, one of the doctors I've gone to see if I can get help (no help btw) thinks that my hands and feet are "imitating" the burnt part of my right hand! I've tried a few different things, including MicroSkin in NY (basically a cosmetic makeup that is supposedly waterproof but not really) and a clinic in Toronto that did re-pigmentation for Vitiligo, let's just say both have been disappointing, the re-pigmentation was basically a tattooing process with what was suppose to be medical grade ink but it never took, faded away in weeks. Now I'm going thru a treatment with a Bangkok clinic that involves oral medication as well as creams, just actually started today so not sure it'll work or not, suppose to see some level of results in a couple months, so we'll see.

I know this will sound quite hypocritical as I've just told you all about my attempts to hide or treat this, but I do think the best thing to do is ignore it, the more one stresses out about it, it seems the worst it gets, some months I'm simply too busy to think about it, the growth seems to slow down, if I constantly pay attention to it, then it seems to grow faster. At least this is what I'd like to believe.

Good luck all and I hope one day there will be a breakthrough, I know all too well the mental anguish that you all suffer. I've actually ran into medical professionals that writes it off as being vain to be concern about it, so I think the medical community see this disease as something of a very low priority, I don't necessarily disagree with that, just that I don't think some of them realize the mental damage it's doing to some of us.

  36. DO NOT GET A TATTOO OVER YOUR VITILIGO

It will cause it to spread faster and it will spread and destroy your tattoo.....it happened to me

I couldn't figure out why my tattoo was strange looking and it kept getting worse.

I went to the doctor and found it, any injury causes the vitiligo to spread there. A tattoo is considered an injury.

    Good Luck

  39. I had vitiligo for 8 years now and I had tried different treatments (PUVA, topical steroid, meladinine cream/solution with exposure to sunlight/PUVA, oral meladinine, oil of bergamot). The vitiligo covered my neck, and one-fourth of my face. I looked for another dermatologist because i lost hope with my past dermatologists. Then somebody recommended me a good natural treatment and it worked very well. Now i'm 90% cured. With only 1 1/2 month of treatment. Watch this review, it helped me a lot: www.naturalvitiligotreatmentsystems.com

  42. Hi All

This is an old post, but I'd like to add some input. I am 31 and have had vitiligo for 16 years. Over these years I frequently get new spots and others get bigger. I also have psoriasis and where is has gone into remission, I was left with more vitiligo spots. I am fair skinned so it's not glaring when you see me, but still noticeable. As psoriasis is painful and itchy, vitiligo is minor to me in the grand scheme of things to worry about. I have maybe 15% body coverage at this stage overall, but easily half my face.
In terms of tattoos... I have a couple and so far they have not triggered more pigment loss, however, keep in mind that this may happen as injuries can cause pigment loss (and a tattoo is an injury to the skin). Rather than thinking it will cover the spots, think of it more as art to either distract from the spot or to add to the beauty that is the multitonal skin.
On another note, many have spoken about how it has impacted their life in the sun. I have it on my face, my upper chest/neck and legs and arms. I live in the north of Australia where I get 300+ days of hot sunshine. Where winter days are still 30 degrees Celsius, long sleeves and long pants are not an option. I wear plenty of sunscreen (at least 30+) and a hat and generally manage pretty well.
Don't let it affect you or your emotions. I am happily married and live life exactly how I want, vitiligo or not. My spots are now a part of who I am.
